It was looking to be a dreary Melbourne Day but nothing was going to stop the fun at biggest racing event on the calendar – Melbourne Cup Day! My very fashionable girl friend, Georgia had come down from the Queensland for the day, which we had been planning for months. From daily chats planning outfits to sharing Pinterest boards, we couldn’t wait for the day to finally come around, especially since we had missed Derby Day!
I had been saving a Peter Pilotto dress for Melbourne Cup, which would be my only outfit this carnival my mum and I didn’t design and make. Being one shouldered and quite tribally, it had been a difficult dress to find the right headpiece to match. Millinery Jill was the right person for the job so we had worked together to create a unique new block for the headpiece.
The morning started at Heading Out Hair & Beauty in Fitzroy, where we both had early appointments as Fashions On The Field starts at 10:30am on Derby and Melbourne Cup days. We quickly rushed home, got changed and made to the track just on time.
The atmosphere this year around the new Fashions Enclosure was electric. “The Park” had a fun, carnival feel with ferris wheels, carousels, food vans and beautiful seating areas – it had something for everyone! Unfortunately, I was knocked out of the Fashions competition in the first round but it meant more time to explore The Park and to ride the ferris wheel!
