Finding a new racing outfit can be hard. We often find ourselves searching boutiques and online stores, but we so often forget whats already at home, hidden in the back of the wardrobe. I’m sure you have some hidden gems if you rummage.. I sure did!
My outfit for the Myer South Australia State final came together using recycled pieces from my wardrobe.. with the added purchase of some new shoes from one of my favourite Melbourne boutiques, Green with Envy. I can’t resist a new pair of shoes!
I wore the floral skirt back in 2012 at the Caulfield Guineas, a creation made from $5 Spotlight clearance fabric and the pink dress – an ASOS bargain I picked up for the Portsea Polo the previous summer.
I layered the skirt over the dress and thought I had a pretty good-looking outfit except for one slight dilemma – the top had a cut out all the way down the back, which I knew the judges wouldn’t be too fond of. So with that in mind I went back to trusty Spotlight to pick up some pink chiffon which I eventually fashioned into a cape, attached it to the dress with some press studs and hey presto, dilemma solved.
This outfit is a great example of two of my best FOTF tips.
- Always rummage through what you already own. It is amazing what you will find at the very back of your wardrobe.
- Always consider layering your outfit. It is a great way to find the perfect top for that pencil skirt that you love. If you are considering a print clash it is always wise to get a second or even a third opinion of the compatibility of the two prints. I also tend to avoid cutting any dresses as they can come in handy to wear to occasions away from the racetrack.
These two tips held me in the good stead, I managed to come First Runner up!
